I am grateful to Nick Stanway for the rare unofficial programme for the 1954 F A Cup Semi-Final. At that time Port Vale were the leaders in the Third Division North and the match was played at Villa Park. A crowd of 70,000 witnessed the match and saw Port Vale take the lead through Albert Leake. At half time Vale led 1-0 but within 15 minutes of the restart West Brom equalised through Jimmy Dudley. The match remained tight until George Lee was fouled and a penalty was awarded. Ironically this was converted by former Vale player Ronnie Allen. For the record, West Brom went on to lift the trophy at Wembley beating Preston North End 3-2.
